Don’t Be Stupid, Make Sure You go with an A Rated Carrier
Browsing around today’s paper I came upon an article detailing how the FTC was trying to shut down CHBA(Consumer Health Benefits Association) for selling phone Florida Health Insurance or worse discount plans. This coming only weeks after the banning the sales of AIM Health Plans.
Just who exactly are buying these plans? The same people who go to McDonald’s each day and then wonder why they are putting on a few pounds.
Listen if your financial future is dependent on any of these carriers; Team Corp, New Era, Assurant Health Access, Health Option One, Mega Life, Midwest National, United American etc run for the hills. These plans are glorified discount plans and will put you in poor house or bankrupt. Please make sure you speak with a licensed broker who only deals with A Rated Carriers through AM Best.

Want an Honest Quote on Health Insurance Ask for a Pre-Screen
When shopping for Florida Health Insurance it is easy to find several quotes from various carriers within minutes. However a question you should ask yourself is are the quotes accurate?
According to Evan Tunis of Florida Healthcare Insurance, “In most cases quotes online are only quoting individuals with optimal height/weight and who have no hospitilizations or medication. If you have any of these factors the quote will not be accurate.
Tunis advises for all clients to ask for a pre-screen from a broker who represents all the major carriers.
“A Pre-Screen” is a likely outcome for a client based upon an underwriter looking at a potential customer. The pre-screen will determine if a client will be considered standard, denied, rated up or have certain things excluded.
It is important before any policy is submitted to have a pre-screen done so you know exactly how much to budget for a Florida medical plan.

Florida Health Insurance Rates Expected to Rise
With Healthcare Reform already passed an unexpected consequence has begun to occur: the rising of health insurance premiums. Beginning in January of 2011 all carriers are required to have their medical loss ratio(MLR) be equal to 80%.
What does this mean for the consumer? Carriers need to make up for you loss of profit and since guaranteed issue Florida health insurance won’t occur till 2014 this is one of the few options carriers have.
So if you are thinking about getting health insurance or want to see if you can get a cheaper plan it is better to act sooner rather than later.

Group vs. Individual Health Insurance
When shopping for Florida health insurance it is prudent to first ask if you will need group or individual health insurance.
Group insurance is recommended for businesses over four employees and if someone has a pre-existing condition. Since group insurance is guaranteed issue, they cannot turn you down for medical coverage.
Individual insurance is usally recommended for individuals, the self employed and those who do not get insurance for there employer. Since these policies are medically underwritten they are most always less expensive then group insurance.

Can I get Florida Health Insurance with a Pregnant Spouse?
I had a client recently who was looking to get insurance for her husband. She was on her company’s works plan which was covering the cost of her upcoming baby. Since the cost of adding her husband to her companies plan was more then she could afford, she asked me if it were possible to get him on an individual plan.
My response to this client was NO. All carriers in Florida will NOT cover the baby because the husband can claim the baby as a dependent; which means the baby’s on the policy non-underwritten.

What Exactly Does an “Exclusion” Rider Mean?
When determining what potential carrier to go with it is important to understand if that carrier will exclude certain medical conditions. But what exactly does this mean?
There are certain carriers such as Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida and United Healthcare that will rider out certain medical conditions if they deem them to high risk. For an example lets look at 45-F who is taking medication to control cholesterol. United Healthcare(Golden Rule) will take this client on however not cover her cholesterol.
This means any doctor visits, testing, Rx, hospitilization etc. associated with her cholesterol will not be covered.
If you are taking any medication or have been diagnosed with any condition within the last 10 years I advise you to call our office before taking out a florida medical insurance. Failure to not understand your policy or exclusion could result in possible bankruptcy.
