PPO Health Options In Florida
If you are looking for a PPO medical plan in Florida the options are slim. You options are either a Blue Cross Blue Options EPO or an AvMed POS. In the past we had choices such as Golden Rule and Cigna but that is in the past.
Evan Tunis, Owner of Florida Healthcare Insurance, “The carriers who have offered large PPO networks in the past have shut down enrollment. In its place are regional carriers or short term medical plans.”
In a case of unintended consequences the plans with the best nationwide networks are short term plans with National General and United. Both of these carriers have products that will cover you nationwide though both are limited to 1,000,000 of claims. To understand if a product like this would help your family please consult a licensed agent.

What to Look for in a Health Insurance Broker?
What to look for in an insurance broker?
1. Are they licensed with all carriers or just represent one carrier? If they just represent one carrier then you will not get a full gauge of what’s available.
2. Are they licensed in my state? Many “navigators” are recommending plans to individuals with no knowledge of insurance but a 40 hour class. Do you want to risk your medical history to them?
3. What carrier does my insurance broker have? Brokers should not be afraid to share this information and if they hem and haw move on.
4. Is the coverage they offering even insurance? Again look closely ask questions. If you feel uncomfortable look into detail at what the insurance carrier they are recommending. If it looks like crap it probably is crap.

What are the penalties/alternatives for Not Signing up for the ACA(Obamacare)?
A) The penalties for not signing up for an ACA compliant plan or having an existing policy prior to January 1st 2014 is $95 or 1% of your income whichever is greater.
What are the alternatives if you didn’t want a plan like this?
If you wanted to save money you could always go with a short term medical plan. These are offered through Golden Rule, Assurant and Health Insurance Innovations. These are NOT major medical plans and are not meant to cover pre-existing conditions. They are however quite affordable and offer some protection. In addition we can always add a critical illness and accident policy to strengthen the benefits.

Will Young People Actually Sign up for the ACA(Obamacare)?
Since the ACA was announced in 2008 one of the great questions that kept popping up was would enough young people sign up? The ACA needs young “healthy” people to sign up to offset some of the costs of older more medically needy folks. Otherwise if they do not sign up rates will increasingly skyrocket. An analogy is that lets look at car insurance and tell a carrier they must take every person who has had five accidents in a year and that same driver with a perfect record and a new car well he has to pay the same..
What has the data told us about young people signing up? According to Evan Tunis, Owner of Florida Healthcare Insurance , young people who don’t qualify for subsidies are staying away in droves. “When I encounter a younger person under 30 they are eager to get a policy however when I advise them on the premium they say thanks but no thanks. It is only those who are getting substantial subsidies that are signing up. More so young people are getting less of a subsidy then older folks with the same income.”
If this trend continues carriers will be forced to reconsider if they want to be apart of the Federal Exchange or not. Carriers such as United Healthcare and Aetna in most states currently have already said we’ll maybe see about 2015 or 2016.

Do I Need to have a job to get a subsidy for the ACA(Obamcare)?
Do I Need to have a job to get subsidy on the ACA (Obamcare)?
A) It depends but in most cases the answer is yes. Subsidies are determined by a myriad of factors but most importantly how much you make. If you are a single person and make under 11,500 you will be not be eligible for a subsidy but rather must go into your state’s Medicaid plan. Don’t want a Medicaid plan that’s fine but your not entitled to a subsidy.
According to Evan Tunis, Owner of Florida Healthcare Insurance, income is a huge stumbling block for those looking for assistance. For some individual who make under 11,500 the realization that the only help is Medicaid is devastating. Many even though there incomes say they qualify for Medicaid are unable to. Tunis advises his clients with questions on this to give him a call before attempting anything on the marketplace.

Who are the major carriers in Florida on the Healthcare Exchange?
You Florida you must remember that certain carriers are participating in the Federal Exchange(Florida Blue, Cigna, Humana, Aetna) etc while others such as Assurant and Golden Rule are strictly off the exchange.
According to Evan Tunis, owner of Florida Healthcare Insurance, this creates a lot of confusion for clients. “Many clients will ask me for a Golden Rule plan with a subsidy thinking that they are on the exchange. The rollout of the ACA has created a lot of confusion where consumers think that is the only place to find plans.”
In addition to further confuse clients plans on the exchange from Humana for example are strictly HMO’s where off the exchange you can get a Point of Service plan.
Tunis advises every client to speak with a licensed professional who represents every carrier thus they are unbiased. To speak with a navigator who isn’t licensed and has no idea what they are recommending is a mistake.

Are My Kids Allowed to by on My Subsidized Obamacare Plan?
The ACA(Affordable Care Act) is many things. Saviour to somce an abomination to others. What is isn’t is a place to find health insurance for your kids.
Evan Tunis, Owner of Florida Healthcare Insurance explains, if a family applies for a subsidy with kids under 18 the kids are automatically routed to a states CHIP or here in Florida Healthy Kids. Kids are not eligible for reduced cost sharing as well. For parents this creates a tough dilemma as the family is split up into different insurance carriers.
Tunis explains if you are going to get an ACA with a subsidy please be aware that kids will not be on the plan.

Does my ACA Insurance Plan(Obamacare) use a different network?
For many shopping on healthcare.gov can be quite an ordeal. There is the identity verification, projected verification, etc that all must be answered before a subsidy is even shown.
More importantly if you want to get a plan on the exchange the network might be different then if you were to shop privately. For example on the exchange Humana is offering an HMO with a network that uses only three hospital in Miami & Broward County. However if you go off the exchange you can get a Humana POS with a much broader network.
Before considering a plan make sure you look at the network and confirm at minimum that your hosptials are in-network.
